  • I am just looking to see what you all think about making more of the state qualifiers $1000 tournaments.  I keep hearing about New York having bigger tournaments than us and that they are better big pong players than we are down here in Maryland it's time to step up the game in Maryland.

    Opinions or suggestions....?

Are you more likely to play in a tournament with a larger prize such as $1000.  Are you willing to pay the higher buy-in for a $1000 state qualifier?  Do you think it will bring out more teams and make it more competitive (whch is a good thing if we are looking to be more competitive on a national level)?

Austin, Jim, Tom and I have tallked about it.  Now I want to hear from you all...

  • I think it goes without saying that I will pay more for higher prize money, and I am certainly more likely to play in those tournaments as well.

I know in NY sometimes the bars throw money into the mix.
They know it brings people in, so the bar makes the prize money a little higher without increasing the buy-in.

  • It's not higher buy-ins that's gonna do it...I think clash of the titans was a testament to that...new york works off sheer volume...the wpt guys can correct me if I'm wrong but they only charge $40-$50 a team for their tourneys and when you get 80+ teams which they are known to do quite frequently then it's much more feasible to do a $1000+ payout with no problem and still make it somewhat worthwhile for the tournament organizer

  • That is what I am talking about.  The buy-ins would be the same as the wsobp satellites that were run in College Park or Philly $40-$50.  I guess I should have stated that to begin with.  I am trying to see if teams are willing to pay this amount for a tournament with a $1000 payout or if you all have any better ideas to make our tournaments larger and more competitive.

  • I'll tell you right now, guaranteeing $1000 will bring more people out and the serious competitors will pay that no problem. I'm from NY and i'd probably make the trip down for that even.

  • I don't think $40-$50 is too much for a WELL-RUN tournament, but even if there is $1,000 on the table most people don't have the time to spend all day and night at a beer pong tournament.

I know Austin can run a 64-team tournament in his sleep, but for some reason it takes everyone else a few more hours.

A standard 32 team double elim tournament if run smoothly should only take 3 hours tops and a 64 team should only take 4.5-5 hours tops.  Is at most 5 hours out of your day too much?  If more teams sign-up and lets say we have for the first time in MD a tournament with maybe 80-90 teams, that should only take an extra 45 mins on top of the max 5 hrs of a 64 team tournament.

    Key words "if run smoothly."

Thus far, Austin and Jim have been the only ones to run a smooth tournament. And the majority of the ones they didn't run, they were there to get things on track.
