This whole thing kind of reminds me of the 2 Kids From Hampstead controversey in the WSOBP.

No Quarter ended up having to replay the game they were supposed to play, even though they had already won. They ended up losing a game they already won.

The two situation are also similar in that there are two sides.  With No Quarter, you could feel bad that they had to replay a game they 'already won'.  On the other hand, they beat a team that had lost twice and was out of the tournament, arguably not as good of a team as the one they really had to play.  You could argue that they got an unfair advantage by getting a warmup game.

I realize this thread isn't about our game in the WSOBP but to say we have an advantage by having a warmup game is ridiculous.  I get the 'you can argue' part but no you really cannot argue that.  It was the finals and we had been playing all day so there was no need for a fucking warm-up game. Instead it took us mentally out of the tournament  to have to replay a game that we had just won.

Just watched the replay of that game in MD and all I can say is wow.  It looked pretty intentional to me but they didn't try to hide it at all so you probably should have seen it.  Sucks, especially  when 'mishaps' happen in crucial games.

I just wanted to say I know these guys and there was no way it was intentional.  It was just the perfect storm of them asking for a 4th ball which sidetracked us and I also noticed that we were busy reracking their rack when the ball was being pulled out of the cup along with them honestly forgetting to remove the cup.  Regardless this is very disappointing but not much can be done since our opponents won't man up and give us the redo we deserve but that's life.  There just won't be a true winner for this tourney since there are two teams with less than two losses.

  • I feel like my points have already been brought up in the previous 7 pages of this topic, but I'm going to put them out there anyway...

Knowing both sides as people I can pretty confidently say that this wasn't done intentionally, and honestly I believe that this happens more often than people think. I know when I'm playing in a big game and the intensity is high, I'm more worried about hitting cups then taking them away. With that being said, Joey, Shawn, Sean, and Mitch are all responsible for cups being taken away.

I feel that this is much like the "dumbass knock your cup off the table" rule. If you're dumb/drunk enough to knock a cup over, and have that count, you can be just as dumb/drunk and not request a made cup be taken away.

It is shitty that the game can't be replayed but I agree why. Unless the two teams are willing to drive out to Full Moon on a Saturday when the weather is 70-75 degrees with 5-10MPH winds, it's not even worth arguing. All that 1st place means is that Joey and Shawn were better that day under those conditions and in that tournament. Joey has a line drive shot that slices through the wind, and clearly gives him the advantage, which lead to him being on the better team that day, and under those conditions.

As we all know, controversy happens in beer pong (or else these forums wouldn't exist) and isn't that what keeps us interested? It's shitty a finals game was decided like that, but who is to say that Sean and Mitch make the last cup a turn later, or even two turns later? They did miss a 6 cup rack 6 times...

  • I have gone record citing the vast similarities between golf and beer pong in recent months.  In lieu of Argentina's Angel Cabrera's recent win at the Masters, I figured I would point out another Argentinian, Roberto De Vicenzo's fate at Augusta some forty years ago.  The tournament in 1968 closely resembles the incident that occurred on Saturday which I am referring to as "The Reisterstown Shuffle."  This quote was pulled from Wikipedia:

"De Vicenzo is best remembered for his misfortune in the 1968 Masters. On the par 4 seventeenth hole, Roberto De Vicenzo made a birdie, but playing partner Tommy Aaron inadvertently entered a 4 instead of 3 on the scorecard. He did not check the scorecard for the error before signing it, and according to the Rules of Golf the higher score had to stand and be counted. If not for this mistake, De Vicenzo would have tied for first place with Bob Goalby, and the two would have met in an 18-hole playoff the next day. His quote afterwards became famous for its simplicity: "What a stupid I am!"

In golf and in beer pong, each person is responsible for remembering his own score/cups hit.  Not a sermon, just a thought.

Theo, why did you steal my phrase? I was referring it as that all day yesterday. First you steal Austin's wave, then you steal my phrase?

Please explain to me how hitting the SAME number of cups makes them the better team that day? Because I do not follow your logic.

I'm not saying you were semi-screwed... but you did have plenty of opportunities to win. Maybe I was jumping ahead to say that they were better that day, seeing as there could have been an entire 2nd game played. I guess I'm judging on the fact that they were in the winners bracket, and you weren't.
